I have been considering creating a kid-safe browser. The problem with this is the interpretation of what "content" is good for which kid groups. I struggled with this for quite a long time because every child and every parent is different. They are different in their interests and in their belief of what is age appropriate or not.
The solution finally came to me that should work for everyone. Forensic IT will create a Kid-Safe browser that initially allows NO sites at all. We will put the content control in the hands of the parents. This will allow each parent to customize the browser for their kids by an easy to use parental control panel that allows the parents to edit accessible URLs that the browser will go to.
Finally, a solution that lets each parent control an individual child's internet usage. We will even ad the ability to configure sites by LoginId. With this, a parent might add Facebook to their 17 year old teen but not to their 14 year old teen.
In addition, the configuration will allow parents to enable the stopping of any other browser automatically--this will be done by examining program signatures and optionally stopping them if not allowed. For example, the child might launch FireFox of InternetExplorer which would allow unrestricted access. Our browser will detect this and prevent them from launching.
Starter Sites - parents can check our starter sites database and allow downloading of sites that we like for kids. In addition, we will put sub-forums at http://forum.forensicit.us that are grouped by ages so parents can share sites with each other that are either good or bad.
Our initial goal is to have the browser ready by December 1st, 2008. I will post more as the work progresses.
